We Would like to Slander One of the Biggest Star Trek Stars and Then Talk Drivel About Three Unknown Women
I kind of skimmed an article recently with a really cringe title. Something like "Meet William Shatner's nepo daughters."
Please don't ever again let me read a title with nepo in it. It's insulting on the face of it -- suggesting his no talent children only got hired and got careers due to who their father was -- and sounds like pedo. Please just don't.
It's also inaccurate in the extreme.
All three of his daughters had roles on Star Trek at some point, probably as children or mostly as children. Basically, they had a "take your kid to work" day with their dad long before he was a big flipping deal.
I know you probably have forgotten, but Star Trek (the original series) was cancelled after just three seasons. It garnered a cult following and ten years later they did Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Another eight years after that, they did Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Star Trek "The Original Series" has to get that descriptor added because it's a huge franchise now. But it wasn't at the time and "THE Motion Picture" strongly implies they only expected to do ONE movie.
So at the time, their daddy was an actor, but not a mega star.
It's common knowledge the Hollywood crowd routinely gives roles to their kids or spouses or whatever. These are frequently non-recurring characters in bit parts.
I think it's generally viewed as a way to get some family time for big actors. And no one really cares.
Nepotism is when you hire family who aren't really qualified so they have a good paycheck and other more qualified people are mad because they are being cut out of the good jobs by no talent relatives.
A child getting a one-off role to work with Daddy isn't that. In fact, it's probably the least worst way to get good acting from children without being abusive to kids to get what you want on screen.
I would bet money a lot of industries working with children are full of perverts looking for an excuse to get time with kids. So even the kids who aren't being sexually assaulted are likely routinely being treated terribly instead of carefully protected by adults interested in their welfare who, nonetheless, need the occasional child to fulfill some piece of the project in question.
Supposedly, drag -- as in drag queen -- comes from Shakespeare and was a note in the margins meaning "dressed as a girl" because in his day, women didn't have acting jobs. These days, we want movies and plays to be more realistic or something than some guy playing a woman when he's obviously not.
We expect women to be played by women and children to be played by children and that metric frequently means we aren't really designing a world safe for women and kids to live in. But, hey, if you are cute enough or talented enough, you might make decent money while being exploited and assaulted.
Maybe. They probably try to shaft you financially too.
Anyway, the gist of what little I bothered to skim of the article in question is that all three of Shatner's daughters had roles on Star Trek at some point, grew up and walked away from Hollywood and chose to pursued non-acting careers. This was no doubt a wise move to choose to not live in their dad's shadow.
No one cares in the slightest about these women and what they did with their lives. That's not why people click on a title about William Shatner's nepo daughters.
People are not going "Gosh, I desperately want to hear about their non-Hollywood careers!" Especially given that the title implies they got acting careers because of who daddy is.
They click on it to find out which kids in which episodes were his kids so they can go see BIG STAR they adore on screen with his kid and go "Awwwwww! She looks like him! Gee, they seem to get along well!"
No, no mention of what roles these women got nor which episodes they were in so you can waste your afternoon looking it up and politely stalking William Shatner and learning more about a big name star from one of your favorite franchises, much less photos or video clips of him and his kids on screen.
I have absolutely no idea what these people were thinking when they wrote this garbage article about three unknown women and their quiet lives out of the limelight who aren't seeking fame. They name drop William Shatner and then do nothing to satisfy Star Trek fans in the slightest.
